Stephen John “Steve” Nash was born on February 7, 1974, in Johannesburg, South Africa. He is of Welsh and English descent. His parents, Jean and John Nash, moved the family to Canada when Steve was a child. He was initially raised in Regina, Saskatchewan, alongside his brother, Martin.
The Nash family later settled in Victoria, British Columbia, where Steve acquired both British and Canadian citizenship. He attended Mount Douglas Secondary School in Saanich and later transferred to St. Michaels University School, a private boarding school in Victoria. It was during this period that Steve began to flourish as a basketball player, eventually being named Player of the Year in British Columbia.
Steve Nash enrolled at Santa Clara University in California on a basketball scholarship after the 1992 season. During his collegiate career, he helped lead the team to multiple NCAA Tournament appearances and demonstrated his potential as an elite point guard.
Nash began his professional career in 1996 after being drafted by the Phoenix Suns. His rookie season was modest, averaging 10.5 minutes per game. Nonetheless, he quickly made strides in the following seasons.
In 1998, Nash was traded to the Dallas Mavericks. He evolved into one of the league’s most dynamic point guards. During his tenure with the Mavericks, he played in all 40 games during one early season, averaging 7.9 points and 2.9 rebounds. By the next season, his performance improved significantly, with averages of 15.6 points and 7.3 assists per game.
In 2004, Nash became a free agent and although there was speculation about his interest in joining other teams, including potential long-term deals, he ultimately re-signed with the Phoenix Suns. His time with Phoenix marked the peak of his career. Notably, during the 2006–2007 NBA season, Nash averaged a career-high 11.6 assists along with 18.6 points per game. He played 81 games in the following season, leading the Suns to 55 wins and the sixth seed in the 2008 NBA Playoffs.
In 2012, Nash was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. Though he considered signing with the New York Knicks or Toronto Raptors, he ultimately felt that joining the Lakers best suited his goals. Nash officially announced his retirement from professional basketball on March 21, 2015. He declined an offer from the Cleveland Cavaliers to serve as a backup for Kyrie Irving, citing health issues and a strong desire to retire as a member of the Lakers.
