Breakthrough and Early Roles
Merchant made her screen debut in 2005 as Georgiana Darcy in the acclaimed film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, directed by Joe Wright, not Andrew Black. That same year, she appeared in the television film My Family and Other Animals as Margo Durrell.
In 2006, she expanded her portfolio with appearances in television films such as The Good Housekeeping Guide, portraying Sara Fox, and Casualty 1906, in which she played Probationer Eastwood. She also appeared in the music video for Jamie T's “If You Got the Money.”
Academic Hiatus and Return to Acting
In 2007, Merchant temporarily paused her acting career to focus on her studies at Cambridge. Though largely occupied with academics, she still participated in entertainment projects, including the music video “Song 4 Mutya (Out of Control)” by Groove Armada featuring Mutya Buena. She also lent her voice to an audio production of Oscar Wilde’s Lady Windermere's Fan, voicing the role of Lady Agatha.
Her return to acting was marked by a busy 2008. That year, she starred as Anna in the independent film Radio Cape Cod. She also appeared as Helena in an episode of the television drama Bone Kickers, and performed in the stage plays Hay Fever and Darling, You Were Marvelous at venues including Queens’ College, Cambridge and the ADC Theatre.
