Temba Bavuma was born in 1990 in Cape Town, in the former Cape Province of South Africa. He is a professional South African cricketer known for his contributions to the national team, particularly in Test and One Day International (ODI) formats. Bavuma attended the South African College Junior School in Newlands and later completed high school at St David’s Marist Inanda in Sandton.
Bavuma began his domestic cricket career in 2008, debuting for Gauteng in a match against Eastern Province. Batting in the middle order, he scored four runs in the first innings. He partnered with teammate Dane Vilas to achieve a notable performance early in his first-class career. In the 2010/2011 season, he made his franchise debut for the Highveld Lions.
In the SuperSport Series, Bavuma scored 242 runs across four matches, with an impressive average of 60.50 during his debut season. One of his standout performances that year was a 124-run innings against the Knights, earning him the Man of the Match award.
The following season, in 2011/2012, he scored 637 runs with an average of 53.08, ranking 11th among the top scorers. In the 2012/13 Sunfoil Series, he finished as the fifth-highest run-scorer, though his average dipped to 31.58. In the 2013/14 season, Bavuma had a strong comeback, scoring 714 runs at an average of 39.66, placing sixth among the top scorers.
Bavuma's consistent domestic performances earned him a place in the South Africa A team. He first represented South Africa A in 2012 in a match against Sri Lanka A in Durban. He also featured in games against Ireland A, Australia A, and India A. Notably, he scored 65 runs in the second innings during a match against India A, marking one of his most memorable contributions at this level.
Later, he was named in Gauteng’s squad for the 2015 Africa T20 Cup, further solidifying his status as a rising talent in South African cricket.
Bavuma made his Test debut for South Africa in December 2014 in a match against the West Indies. In January 2016, he made history by becoming the first Black African cricketer to score a Test century for South Africa. He achieved this milestone with an unbeaten 102 against England in Cape Town during the second Test of the series.
