"Can We Talk," which peaked at number 9 on the Hot 100 and number 1 on the Billboard R&B charts. The album's title track, which also peaked at number 9 on the Hot 100, was written by Babyface and featured on his double-Platinum-selling second studio album, I'm Ready, released in 1993. After releasing his first two albums, Campbell released his third, Back to the World, in 1996. This album was not as commercially or critically successful as his first two releases. Tevin Campbell, his fourth and most recent studio album, was released in 1999, but it received a dismal reception on Billboard's album charts.

Career

In August 1989, Campbell was introduced to the R&B World by Quincy Jones. Campbell's first single was "Tomorrow (A Better You, Better Me)," which peaked at number 1 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip Hop Singles chart in June 1990 and became his signature song. This was a vocal rendition of an instrumental by The Brothers Johnson from 1976. This track served as the lead single from Jones' critically acclaimed ensemble L.P. Back on the Block won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1991 for its outstanding achievement. Following his collaboration with Jones and a group of writers and producers, including Siedah Garrett Campbell, recorded additional music with producers Narada Michael Walden, Al B. Sure, Babyface, and others and with Jones.

His first solo hit was "Round and Round," which peaked at number 3 on the R&B chart in November 1990 and number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 1991. The song was produced by Prince and appeared in the film Graffiti Bridge, which Prince, among other things, also directed.

Following his appearance in the 1990 film Graffiti Bridge, Campbell appeared as a guest star on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air the following year, portraying fictional teen idol "Little T," Ashley's celebrity crush and date in the first-season episode "Just Infatuation." In addition, he was mentioned in two subsequent episodes. As a result of Ashley using Will's autographed Willie Mays baseball for batting practice and plotting to use Tevin Campbell as part of a publicity stunt to promote Ashley's music career, Will threatened to destroy Ashley's Tevin Campbell posters. Will also threatened to demolish Ashley's Tevin Campbell posters. Despite receiving a Grammy Award nomination for "Round and Round" at the 33rd Grammy Awards for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, Campbell was defeated by Luther Vandross' "Here and Now" on the ceremony night.

The concert, titled An Evening with Tevin Campbell, took place on June 14, 2014, at B.B. King's Blues Club & Grill in New York City and received overwhelmingly positive reviews. It was officially announced that he was working on a new album, which would feature collaborations with producers Teddy Riley and Teddy Riley, singer Faith Evans, and rapper T-Pain. Campbell took the stage at the 2014 Essence Music Festival in New Orleans on July 5 to perform. The performance received a lot of positive feedback. Campbell collaborated with Naturi Naughton on the song "Let it Flow," which was featured on the Full Force album With Love from Our Friends, which was released on August 26, 2014.

Campbell signed a deal with Spectra Music Group in November, which was announced at the time.

During the fourth annual D23 Expo, Campbell made a rare appearance at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California, to perform his song "I 2 I" from the A Goofy Movie soundtrack. The performance took place at the conclusion of the A Goofy Movie cast reunion, which took place at the Anaheim Convention Center on August 14, 2015.

Campbell appeared in a remake of the song "Maybe Tomorrow," which was originally recorded by The Jackson 5. The song was released on September 29. The song appears on jazz musician Aaron Bing's ninth studio album, Awakening, which was released in 2012. At the 2015 Soul Train Music Awards on November 29, 2015, Campbell performed his song "Can We Talk" while Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds played piano as a tribute to Edmonds, who had been honored with the Legend Award the previous year. Celebrities such as Brandy, Fantasia Barrino, Boyz II Men, Bobby Brown, and Babyface performed at the tribute, including some of the hit songs he had written for other artists.

A new single from Campbell's fifth studio album, "Safer on the Ground," is now available on iTunes and Google Play. The song was released as a "buzz single" and was made available for free streaming on SoundCloud a day earlier. When asked about the new album in an interview with the Jet magazine website, Campbell responded by saying that the song reminded him of a modern-day version of "Tell Me What You Want Me to Do." Aside from the fact that the song is about a broken heart, Campbell explained in the interview that it represents being humble and safe, alluding to his disappointment with the music industry during the early stages of his career. In a recent interview, Campbell stated that he disagrees with the new sound of current R&B music and prefers his music to be "authentic."

On March 19, 2019, Tevin confirmed on social media that he would be featured in the fourth season of the OWN scripted drama series Queen Sugar. "...keep tuned to...SEASON 4, BABY!" he teased his fans while on the set of the show's production, without giving away too much information.

The news comes after months of speculation that filmmaker Ava DuVernay was planning to feature Campbell on the show as a response to the millennial generation's smear campaign against his name. In the video, he thanks her for sticking to her word, as well as the cast and crew for making him feel at ease.
