Thomas Alexander Dekker was born in Las Vegas, Nevada. He comes from an artistic family—his mother, Hilary, is a concert pianist, singer, actress, and acting coach. His father, David John Ellis Dekker, was an artist involved in set design, acting, and opera singing. Hilary is British with Welsh roots, while David held American nationality with Dutch and English ancestry. During his childhood, the family lived in various parts of the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom.
Dekker began acting at the age of six, appearing in the soap opera The Young and the Restless. He went on to feature in small roles in major television series and films, including Star Trek Generations and two episodes of Star Trek: Voyager. He also appeared in John Carpenter’s 1995 horror film Village of the Damned and guest-starred in an episode of Seinfeld as the character Bobby.
Dekker gained recognition for his role as Zach in the NBC series Heroes.
