Personal Life

Yolandi said that her childhood was normal and she always got herself into fights and known as ‘the little punk’. At the age of 16, her parents send her to a boarding school. According to Visser her school was full of artistic freedom and when she came in touch with the other creative kids of the school; she started developing serious interest in art and music. She also mentions that artists like Eminem, Marilyn Manson, Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails, PJ Harvey and Aphex Twin fueled her interest in music.

In 2003, Yolandi met Ninja for the first time and it was the beginning of her new life. Watkin Tudor Jones is the original name of Ninja. Ninja and Yolandi are still working together after twelve years. They always stays with each other but never admitted that they are in a relationship. Yolandi even has a daughter with Ninja named Sixteen Jones. Sixteen is also a member of the band ‘The Boy with the Rainbow Face’. She is the writer and backup singer of her band.

 Career Experience

Currently Yolandi is the vocalist of South African rap & rave group ‘Die Antwoord’ and this group was formed on 2008 in Cape Town. Other crew members of her group are Ninja and Hi-Tek. The group gained its stardom after the launch of the video of their song ‘Enter the Ninja’ from their album ‘$0$’. Die Antwoord calls its culture and musical style by the name ‘Zef’ which is slang in Afrikaans and stands for common.

She has sung songs in many genres which includes electronic, hip hop and rave style. She started her career in 2001 with ‘The Constructus Corporation’. Before forming Die Antwoord she has also worked in the South African music group ‘MaxNormal.TV’.

In 2015, Yolandi and Ninja have worked in a movie ‘Chappie’ which is directed by Neill Blomkamp. Chappie is a Sci-fi drama film. Before this movie Ninja and Yolandi have also been starred in the short movie ‘Umshini’ back in 2011.

Her group Die Antwoord has launched total three albums. Their debut album was launched in 2009 by the name ‘$0$’. They had signed a contract with the famous American record label ‘Interscope records. But later they established their own record label ‘Zef Recordz’ in 2011. The second album was ‘Ten$Ion’ in 2012. Final album in 2014 which goes by the name ‘Donker Mog’
