Yuzuru Hanyu is a Japanese figure skater widely regarded as one of the greatest athletes in the sport’s history. He was born on December 7, 1994, in Sendai, Japan. Hanyu began skating at the age of four, inspired by his older sister, who was also a figure skater. Demonstrating precocious talent, he competed in the Japan Novice Championships in the Novice B category at age nine, where he won the gold medal.
Throughout his career, Yuzuru Hanyu has set new standards in figure skating. He has broken world records a remarkable nineteen times—more than any other singles figure skater in history. Although he previously held world records for the short program, free skate, and combined totals under the now-retired scoring system, his legacy includes being the first skater to achieve scores exceeding 100 in the short program, 200 in free skating, and 300 in combined total, under the International Skating Union’s (ISU) judging system.
Hanyu is a two-time Olympic champion, having won gold medals at the 2014 Sochi and 2018 PyeongChang Winter Games. He is the first men's singles skater since Dick Button in 1952 to win back-to-back Olympic titles. In addition to his Olympic triumphs, Hanyu is a two-time World Champion (2014, 2017). He also claimed four Grand Prix Final titles and earned three silver medals at the Four Continents Championships.
