Early Life and Education

Zazie Olivia Beetz was born on June 1, 1991, in Berlin, Germany, to a German father who works as a cabinetmaker and an African-American mother employed as a social worker. Her family moved to New York City during her childhood, and she was raised in the Manhattan neighborhood of Harlem. Growing up bilingual, she spoke both German and English at home.

Beetz developed a passion for acting at a young age, participating in community theater and school productions. She received formal acting education from institutions including Muscota New School, the Harlem School of the Arts, and the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, where she refined her craft.

Breakthrough and Rise to Fame

Beetz rose to prominence through her acclaimed role on Atlanta, where her portrayal of Van brought her both critical and popular recognition. The show, created by Donald Glover, blends comedy with social commentary, and Beetz’s performance was widely praised for its emotional depth and realism.
