Amanda Burden

Amanda Burden was born as Amanda Jay Mortimer Burden in the year 1944 in New York. Her mother, Babe Paley was a socialite. Her father, Stanley G. Mortimer Jr. was Standard Oil Fortune heir. She is the granddaughter of Dr. Harvey Cushing, who was an author and won Pulitzer Prize for his writing. Dr. Harvey was also known as “Father of American Neurosurgery”. She has a brother and five half siblings. Her mother married William Paley in the year 1947. She completed her graduation from Sarah Lawrence College in 1976 with Environmental Science as her major. Before that, she also attended Wellesley College for some time. But then she got married in 1964 and left the college. After that, she attended Columbia University and completed Master of Urban Planning. She wrote a thesis on solid-waste management, which got her an award.

She joined an architecture organization Gruzen & Partners. She worked for a project for Public spaces under her mentor William H. Whyte. She was vice president for design and planning for the “Battery Park City Authority” from 1983 to 1990. She was the super head for Bloomberg’s economic development agenda when she was the planning director of New York. She has always been in favor of continuous shop fronts, open space and other things that give an idea of lively life of streets. She was the main person behind saving High Line, which was converted into a park. Bloomberg administration revealed the draft plan for waterfront, which is known as Vision 2020. The plan aims to find the solution for increasing water level problem and making water accessible to canoeists and Kayakers. In 1966, her name was included in the Best Dressed list at the age of 22 years. She got award for Design Patron in 2004 by “National Design Museum”. She was awarded with Doctorate in Public Administration by Pratt Institute in 2005. In the same year she received Center of Architecture award by “American Architects Institute”. The New York Observer kept her at the 5th position in the list of most powerful people. She was awarded with J.C. Nicholas Prize in 2009 for her creative thinker in Urban development. This prize is accompanied with $100,000. She donated the money to ULI to create public places around the world. She received the award from American Architectural Foundation in the year 2011.

She got married twice in her life. Her first husband’s name is Shirley Carter Burden. Their wedding was on 13th June 1964. At that time, her husband was studying at Law School in Columbia. They had 2 kids. They headed for divorce in 1972. Then she married head of Warner Communications in 1979. However the couple split and got divorced in 1981. It is said that she has been in a relationship since 1993 with Charlie Rose who is a TV personality. There is no information about her estimated net worth. Although looking at her career, she must be among the rich people of New York City.
