Barnard went on to appear in Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk (2017) as Gibson, one of the film's most prominent roles to date. His subsequent credits include the BBC drama Thirteen, Boris Pavlikovsky in Netflix's adaptation of The Goldfinch, the Netflix series 1899, and a recurring role in The Last Kingdom. He also appeared in the 2023 production The Goldsmiths' Strike. Earlier television credits include the Sky1 adaptation of Moonfleet, in which he played John Trenchard.
