Swanepoel is of Afrikaner heritage and Dutch descent. She grew up with her older brother, Stephen. At the age of 15, she was discovered by a model scout at a flea market in Durban, setting the stage for her international modeling career.

Victoria’s Secret Angel and the Royal Fantasy Bra

In 2010, Swanepoel was named a Victoria’s Secret Angel. That same year, she also modeled swimwear for the Kardashian brand and took part in the official opening of a Victoria's Secret retail store in West Edmonton Mall, Canada. In 2013, she adorned the cover of the highly anticipated Victoria’s Secret Swim Catalogue and was chosen to wear the Royal Fantasy Bra in that year’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.

The Royal Fantasy Bra, valued at $10 million, was designed by Mouawad and incorporated over 4,200 precious gems, including diamonds, yellow sapphires, and rubies, all set in 18-karat gold. A 52-carat ruby was positioned at the center. It was one of the most valuable Fantasy Bras ever created, second only to the 2005 Sexy Splendor Fantasy Bra worn by Gisele Bündchen.
