September 11th, 2001: A Personal Recollection

Clare vividly recalls where she was on the morning of September 11, 2001. She was returning to NBC’s headquarters at Rockefeller Center via bus, following a morning meeting. As the bus traveled down Fifth Avenue, a fellow passenger announced that a plane had struck one of the Twin Towers. Bewildered and anxious, Clare joined other commuters in stunned silence as they glimpsed smoke rising from lower Manhattan. She remembers the moment as the beginning of a profound shift—personally and professionally. Upon exiting the bus, she ran toward her office to begin coverage of the unfolding tragedy. A stranger called after her, telling her to “take care”—an act of kindness that has stayed with her since.
