Clea Helen D’Etienne DuVall was born in Los Angeles, California. She is the only child of Stephen DuVall, an actor, and Rosemary Hatch. Her father is known for his role in the film The Keeper, alongside Steven Seagal.
Before launching her acting career, Clea DuVall worked in a coffee shop. She made her film debut in the 1996 movie Little Witches. Early in her career, she appeared in episodes of popular television series such as ER and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Her breakout role came in 1998 when she portrayed a goth student in Robert Rodriguez’s science fiction horror film The Faculty.
Following that, she gained critical attention for playing an institutionalized pathological liar in the Oscar-winning film Girl, Interrupted. She also starred as a lesbian teenager sent to conversion therapy camp in the cult classic But I’m a Cheerleader. Other notable roles during this period include parts in Thirteen Conversations About One Thing, Ghosts of Mars, and The Astronaut’s Wife.
DuVall starred as Sofie in the HBO series Carnivàle, which aired from 2003 to 2005 and received critical acclaim. Prior to that, she appeared in the 2004 television movie Helter Skelter, earning a Satellite Award nomination for her performance. She also appeared in projects such as 21 Grams, Identity, and the HBO film The Laramie Project.
Additional roles include appearing in David Fincher’s film Zodiac, the indie comedy Itty Bitty Titty Committee, and a recurring role in NBC’s science fiction drama series Heroes, where she played Audrey Hanson. DuVall also starred alongside Anne Hathaway in the thriller Passengers.
