Eric Shawn was born on March 12, 1957 in New York City, New York. Eric’s father was Gilbert Shawn, he was an Army Lieutenant Colonel at the time of Eric's birth. His mother was Melba Rae, she worked as an actress in soap opera shows. She is mostly known for her role in Search for Tomorrow which was a critically acclaimed soap opera at the time it was airing
Shawn completed his primary education and graduated from Trinity School in New York during the 1975 school year. He later went on to get a degree in Urban Studies from Georgetown University in 1979.
