Justin James Watt, widely known as J.J. Watt, was born on March 22, 1989, in Wisconsin, United States. His father, John Watt, worked as a firefighter, while his mother, Connie Watt, served as a Vice President for a building inspection company. J.J. Watt has two younger brothers, Derek Watt and T.J. Watt, both of whom are also professional football players. The Watt family has Scottish ancestry. During his early years, J.J. showed a strong interest in hockey before eventually shifting his focus to football.

J.J. attended Pewaukee High School, where he was actively involved in athletics. Excelling in multiple sports, he was honored with the Woodland Conference Player of the Year Award. After high school, he enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he played college football while also working part-time as a Pizza Hut delivery driver to help pay for his expenses.
