Jonathan Michael "Jon" Lovitz was born on July 21, 1957, in Los Angeles, California. He graduated from the University of California, Irvine, in 1979 with a degree in theater. Following his undergraduate studies, he pursued acting at the Film Actors Workshop.
Lovitz began his professional career in 1985 when he joined the cast of Saturday Night Live (SNL). He remained a cast member until 1990. During his time on SNL, he gained popularity through memorable characters such as Tommy Flanagan, the pathological liar. His rising fame led to a significant movie contract, and within two years, he was nominated for an Emmy Award for his work on the show.
Lovitz made his initial foray into television outside of SNL with a role as Mole, an investigator, in the 1985–86 legal comedy series Foley Square. He gained further recognition for his voice work, especially through recurring guest appearances on The Simpsons, where he voiced several characters including Artie Ziff and Jay Sherman. He also lent his voice to the Disney animated film The Brave Little Toaster.
In addition to commercials and print ads, Lovitz secured a starring role as the antagonist Emperor Tod Spengo in the 1992 sci-fi comedy Mom and Dad Save the World. He also played the lead role in High School High, a satire of Hollywood’s inner-city school dramas. His television guest appearances include roles on Friends (appearing twice in different roles), Seinfeld as Gary Fogel, Two and a Half Men, and a recurring guest role on NewsRadio. In May 2010, he appeared as the Raw Guest Host on WWE Raw.
Lovitz has demonstrated a strong connection to the theatre, appearing in Neil Simon's play The Dinner Party at the Music Box Theatre on Broadway. A talented vocalist, he has performed at Carnegie Hall twice, and has sung the national anthem at both the U.S. Open and Dodger Stadium.
Although widely recognized as a comedic actor, Lovitz formally entered the stand-up comedy scene in 2003, performing for the first time at the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles. Building on this momentum, in November 2007, he opened The Jon Lovitz Comedy Club at Aubergine. He later expanded with another venue located on Universal CityWalk at Universal Studios Hollywood.
In 2009, the Universal CityWalk location hosted the inaugural MNA Roast stand-up comedy show. The club was renamed The Jon Lovitz Comedy Club and Podcast Theatre on May 29, 2011, with filmmaker Kevin Smith hosting six live podcasts during its premiere event. Despite a number of successful shows, the venue closed in November 2014.
Jon Lovitz tends to keep his personal life private. However, he has been romantically linked to model Janice Dickinson in the past.
