Hirsch attended school in Brooklyn, New York, and later earned a degree in physics from City College of New York. Though he briefly served in the U.S. Army, his passion for acting ultimately led him to pursue a theatrical career, beginning in local New York theaters.

Personal Life

Hirsch married Elisa Sadaune in 1963, and they had a son named Alexander. The couple later divorced. After a period of single life, during which Hirsch was linked to several relationships, he married fashion designer Bonni Sue Chalkin in 1992. Together, they had a son and a daughter before separating in 2005. Rumors about his sexuality have circulated over the years; however, these claims are unfounded. Hirsch has been married twice and is the father of three children.
