Katherine McNamara is an American actress, dancer, singer/songwriter known for her portrayal of Clary Fray in the television series Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments. Katherine Grace McNamara was born on November 22, 1995, in Kansas City, Missouri. McNamara began her professional career at the age of thirteen when she appeared in the Broadway production of Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music along with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angela Lansbury.
Katherine McNamara graduated from Drexel University’s Le Bow School of Business at the age of seventeen. McNamara also has film credits having appeared in New Years Eve (2011), R.L. Stine’s Monsterville: Cabinet of Souls (2015), and Contest (2013). McNamara appeared as Becky Thatcher in the re-make of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn (2016), and starred, along with Mira Sorvino, in Indiscretion (2016). McNamara is also an award winning dancer and has a passion for all forms of dance including ballet. Recently, Katherine McNamara was awarded the 2018 People’s Choice Award for Top Female Television Actress for her work on Shadowhunters. McNamara is a community activist and supports Girl Up, the United Nation’s girl empowerment organization, and is a spokesperson for Stomp Out Bullying. Katherine McNamara is also studying for a Master of Science degree in Applied Economics at Johns Hopkins University.
