Kyle John Abbott was born on June 18, 1987, in Empangeni, Natal Province, South Africa. Of South African nationality, he was raised in the Natal region. Abbott developed an interest in cricket during his teenage years and pursued the sport seriously after finishing school, eventually establishing himself as a strong performer in domestic cricket.
In 2006 and 2007, Kyle Abbott played for Clevedon Cricket Club in England, participating in the West of England Premier League – Bristol Somerset division. His domestic career in South Africa began in earnest in 2009 when he joined the KwaZulu-Natal team. He remained with the side until 2016. During this period, he also played for the Dolphins, continuing to represent the team in subsequent years.
Abbott’s prowess led him to sign with Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2013, not 2012 as previously stated. In 2014, he joined Hampshire County Cricket Club in England. Over the next few years, Abbott's club career expanded to include appearances for Chennai Super Kings and KwaZulu-Natal Inland in 2015. While with KwaZulu-Natal Inland, he participated in the 2015 Africa T20 Cup.
In 2016, Abbott returned to Kings XI Punjab and also played for Worcestershire and the Warriors. The following year, in 2017, he rejoined Hampshire, with whom he would later sign a Kolpak contract that effectively ended his international career.
Abbott made his Test debut for the South African national team in February 2013 in a match against Pakistan, earning cap number 316. He delivered an exceptional performance, taking seven wickets in the third Test and earning the Man of the Match honor. This feat placed him among the top debut performers in Test cricket history.
He made his One Day International (ODI) debut later that same year and also featured in South Africa’s Twenty20 International (T20I) squad. Despite showing promise, his international career was relatively brief.
