Lahmard Tate was born on January 7, 1970, in Chicago, Illinois, United States. He is the middle of three brothers—Larron, the eldest, and Larenz, the youngest. All three Tate brothers have pursued acting careers. He is the son of Larry and Peggy Tate.
Lahmard Tate began his acting career with a role in the 1987 film Barfly. He continued to build his filmography throughout the early 1990s with appearances in movies such as Across the Tracks (1991) and Jason's Lyric (1994). He also appeared in the Showtime television special Without a Pass (1991–1992), the Fox TV movie Seeds of Tragedy (1991), and the sitcom Roc (1991–1994).
Additional credits include his roles in the drama Panther (1995) and the parody comedy Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood (1996). In 2006, he appeared in Rocky Balboa.
One of Lahmard Tate's more well-known roles came in the film Barbershop (2002), directed by Tim Story and produced by State Street Pictures. The comedy starred Ice Cube, Cedric the Entertainer, and Anthony Anderson. The story focuses on Calvin Palmer Jr. (Ice Cube), who owns a neighborhood barbershop and considers selling it to a loan shark named Lester Wallace. Lahmard portrayed Billy, the best friend of JD (played by Anthony Anderson). The two characters are involved in a subplot involving a stolen ATM, bringing humor and tension to the storyline. Produced on a budget of $12 million, Barbershop went on to earn approximately $77 million at the box office.
