Early Life and Education

Lea Gabrielle Potts was born in 1975 in Alexandria, Virginia, United States, to American parents. She is of white ethnicity and completed her early education at Mount Vernon High School in Virginia. During her high school years, she was recognized for her academic excellence, becoming a finalist in the prestigious Westinghouse Science Talent Search, reflecting her strong interest in science and engineering.

She went on to attend the United States Naval Academy, where she earned a degree in mechanical engineering in 1997. Following graduation, she commenced flight training at Naval Air Station Pensacola in Florida, the U.S. Navy’s premier flight school. Upon completing her training, she earned her Naval Aviator Wings and also qualified as a commercial pilot.

Military Career and Aviation Background

Gabrielle’s passion for aviation began in childhood, particularly inspired by witnessing a performance by the Blue Angels at an airshow. She served in the United States Navy from 1997 to 2009 as a naval aviator. Her call sign during her time as a pilot was "Flower." She flew the F/A-18 Hornet, a single-seat fighter aircraft, and also fulfilled key responsibilities as a Landing Signal Officer (LSO) and squadron public affairs officer.

Her military service included deployments that supported national security and intelligence efforts. Gabrielle was involved in intelligence operations in Afghanistan and worked alongside a Navy SEAL unit. She also served as an intelligence operations officer during Operation Enduring Freedom and was appointed as a defense foreign liaison officer.
