Who is Lorraine Bracco?

Lorraine Bracco is known as an American actress. She is most famous for her role as Dr Jennifer Melfi on the HBO mafia drama series called The Sopranos. She also played Karen Hill in the Martin Scorsese film called GoodFellas and Angela Rizzoli in the TNT series known as Rizzoli and Isles.

Lorraine Bracco was born in 1954, in New York. She is the daughter of Eileen and Salvatore Bracco Sr. She attended Hicksville High School and was considered a bright student because of her ability to speak three languages, Italian, French, and English.

Lorraine Bracco went to France in 1974 and she became the model of Jean Paul Gaultier. While still working there, she was introduced to Lina Wertmuller who was a novelist and director at the same time. He recruited her to work on his new film which was called Camorra. She played a role as a street woman with unkempt hair and disheveled clothes. She played roles in many French films. She also worked as a DJ for Radio Luxembourg.

Lorraine Bracco's acting career got a big break when she played in the role of Kate Hill who is the wife of a mobster in the popular mobster film, Goodfellas. She got nominated for the academy award of best supporting actress and she was also nominated for a golden globe award. She was able to win an award for best supporting actress from the National Film Critics Association and Chicago Film Critics Association.

When she was auditioning for the HBO mob drama, Th Sopranos, they wanted her to play the lead female role named Carmela Soprano but Bracco choose to play Dr Jennifer Melfi instead. She wanted the role of the psychiatrist after reading the script. She was nominated three times for a Golden Globe because of this career changing role.

Bracco played the role of a hostage of Paul Guilfoyle for the show, "Crime Story" Hide and Go Thief. Other roles she has on her credits include Hackers, Radio Flyer, Medicine Man, Basketball Diaries, Riding in the Cars with Boys, and Someone to Watch Over Me.

She owns Bracco Wines which he co-owns with Straight up Brand LLC. She has a line of wines that were featured in the show named Top Chef in 2006. Bracco has also been active in artistic and environmental organizations. She was a longstanding member of the board of directors called Riverkeeper which is an organization meant to protect the environment and preserve the Hudson River.

Bracco published her memoir in 2006 called On the Couch where she shares information about her professional and personal challenges together with triumphs.
