Louise first rose to fame as a member of the R&B group Eternal, which she joined in 1992. She left the group in 1995 to pursue a solo career and subsequently signed a record deal with First Avenue management and EMI Records. Adopting the mononym "Louise," she released her debut solo single, "Light of My Life," a ballad that reached number eight on the UK Singles Chart. Her debut album, Naked, followed in 1996 and enjoyed commercial success.
