In 1999, the Hale siblings independently released an EP titled Don't Mess With the Time Man. Soon after, they were joined by guitarist Joe Hottinger and bassist Josh Smith, solidifying the lineup of Halestorm. The band officially signed with Atlantic Records in the mid-2000s, marking a turning point in their career trajectory.
Halestorm quickly gained traction in the rock music scene, fueled by Lzzy’s powerful vocals and dynamic stage presence. The band gained additional recognition after appearing on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon in 2010. In 2012, Halestorm made history as the first female-fronted group to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Active Rock chart, a feat they accomplished three times in succession. That same year, they also became the first female-fronted rock band to win the Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance.
To date, Lzzy Hale has released multiple studio albums with Halestorm, including their self-titled debut Halestorm (2009), The Strange Case Of... (2012), and Vicious (2018), among others. Known for their relentless touring schedule, the band is reported to perform nearly 250 shows annually, solidifying their reputation as one of the hardest working acts in rock music.
In 2014, the Gibson Guitar Corporation released a signature Lzzy Hale Explorer guitar, recognizing her influence and musicianship. Her musical inspirations include Heart, Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Sevendust, Pat Benatar, and Alice in Chains. During an interview with Cleverscene, she remarked, “I grew up with [Cinderella singer] Tom Keifer on my wall. I’ve always been 10 years behind. My dad is into any band with a color in its name: Blue Öyster Cult, Deep Purple, and Pink Floyd. My mom gave me Heart, Janis Joplin, and Pat Benatar.”
In 2013, Lzzy launched a clothing and accessories line called Scissor Happy. According to Hale, each item in the four-piece collection was made by hand while she was on tour. The line featured unisex designs and was praised for reflecting her personal style.
Lzzy Hale is currently not married but has been in a long-standing relationship with fellow Halestorm guitarist Joe Hottinger. She has shared in interviews that she has personal reservations about marriage due to witnessing challenges in her parents’ relationship. In 2021, Hale publicly came out as bisexual, further solidifying her role as an advocate for LGBTQ+ visibility in the rock music community.
