Malford Milligan

Early Life and Education

Malford Milligan was born on March 29, 1959, in Taylor, Texas, into a working-class family. As a child, he and his family participated in seasonal cotton harvesting, traveling from Central Texas to the South Plains for work. These early years were marked by economic hardship, often living in temporary housing provided by growers. His father, who had dropped out of school in the third grade due to the demands of migrant labor, exemplified the challenges the family faced.

Initially, Milligan did not plan to become a musician. He attended Texas Tech University before transferring to the University of Texas, where he studied sociology. While at UT, Milligan began performing at local jam sessions at Antone’s nightclub. These performances helped him support himself while pursuing his education and ultimately sparked his passion for music.

Musical Discovery and Early Career

Milligan’s vocal journey took a significant turn during a meditative chanting session with a Buddhist society at the University of Texas. A voice teacher present was so moved by his soulful voice that she offered to train him formally. This mentorship marked the beginning of his path as a professional singer.

His first band, Stick People, comprised locally talented musicians and performed regularly at weekend gigs. This foundational experience honed his skills and increased his visibility in the Austin music scene.

Rise to Prominence with Storyville

Malford Milligan is best known as the lead vocalist of Storyville, an acclaimed blues-rock quintet active from 1994 to 1999. The band featured prominent musicians David Holt (guitar, vocals), David Grissom (guitar, vocals), Tommy Shannon (bass), and Chris Layton (drums). All members brought extensive experience, with Shannon and Layton previously known for their work with Stevie Ray Vaughan in Double Trouble.

Storyville released three critically acclaimed albums during its tenure, gaining a strong regional following. Despite its popularity, the band never achieved the national success Milligan had envisioned, and it disbanded in 1999.
