Marc Cherry is an American producer. Born in 1962 in Long Beach, California, he is also equally talented as a writer. He earned the most fame by producing two major TV shows –“Desperate Housewives”, a TV series which used to be shown on ABC, and “Devious Maids”, another TV series which airs on Lifetime. Both these TV series belong to a particular genre known as dramedies.
He stayed for a brief period in Oklahoma after his birth but had to move to California later, since his father, who was an accountant, was assigned a new post there. He studied in Troy High School in California. After passing out of high school, he studied at the California State University. At first, he was interested in building a career on performance. But that changed in 1986, when he won $15,000 from the game show “Pyramid”. This made him reconsider his initial decision, and he decided to go to Hollywood to work as a writer.
However, the timing wasn’t right for Marc. The writer’s strike was going on that time, so he was forced to work as a personal assistant of Dixie Carter, who played a major role in the sitcom “Designing Women”.
His luck changed for the better in 1990, when he got the job of a writer and producer of the hit TV series “The Golden Girls.” Not only that, he also got the job of a producer in the TV series “The Golden Palace”, which was actually a spinoff of the former TV series, although it didn’t last long. He was the co-creator of two TV shows, “The 5 Mrs. Buchanans” and “The Crew”, although none of them weren’t too popular among the audiences so had to be cancelled early.
After several failed attempts of producing a popular TV series, he finally made a breakthrough in 2002. He was chatting with his mother when this idea of a TV show focussing on the lives of four depressed housewives came to his mind. And that’s how “Desperate Housewives” was created. The show was aired on ABC and it was an instant hit. It even resulted in several heated debates among its audiences. It became so popular that Marc rose to fame in a few months. He started receiving various offers from different parties worldwide. He finally signed a contract with Touchstone, because before the show was released, unlike other parties, they had supported him all throughout its production. He even played a cameo himself in the final episode of the show.
After “Desperate Housewives”, his next hit TV show was “Devious Maids”, which also airs on ABC. It started in 2013. The pilot episode, despite receiving good ratings, was actually rejected by ABC at first. Most people believed that this meant that the show won’t last long. They were completely wrong, though. It has already lasted 3 seasons with very impressive ratings, and the 4th season is supposed to premiere next year.
Unlike most Hollywood celebrities, he doesn’t have a Twitter account. He is also inactive in most social networking sites.
As of this year, Marc Cherry has an estimated net worth of $26 million.
