Marco Antonio Rubio was born on May 28, 1971, in Miami, Florida, United States. He is the third child and second son of Mario Rubio Reina and Oriales Rubio. His parents, originally from Cuba, immigrated to the United States in 1956. At the time of Marco's birth, neither parent was a U.S. citizen, though they later obtained citizenship. As a Cuban American, Rubio has become one of the prominent American politicians of the 21st century.
Marco Rubio has three siblings: an older brother, Mario; an older sister, Barbara; and a younger sister, Veronica. His father worked as a bartender, while his mother was employed as a housekeeper. Rubio graduated from South Miami Senior High School in 1989. He initially attended Tarkio College in Missouri for one year before transferring to Santa Fe Community College in Florida. He later obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Florida in 1993. In 1996, he earned a Juris Doctor from the University of Miami School of Law.
Rubio's interest in politics developed during his college years, leading him to become actively involved with the Republican Party. He was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2000, representing the 111th district, and served for more than eight years. From November 21, 2006, to November 18, 2008, he held the influential position of Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives.
In April 2015, Rubio announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for the 2016 U.S. presidential election. However, he suspended his campaign in March 2016 after losing the Florida primary to Donald Trump. His tenure in the Senate, as well as his presidential campaign, solidified his presence in national politics.
