Nicky Boje

International Career with South Africa

Boje was first selected for the South African national team in 1995 for a tour of Zimbabwe. Unfortunately, due to injury, he was unable to participate in any matches during the tour. Initially positioned as an all-rounder, he often batted at number eight because of an already well-established lineup. Despite this lower-order placement, his first-class batting record demonstrated that he was more capable with the bat than often credited.

When called upon, Boje also contributed valuable overs with the ball. Captains frequently turned to him in situations that demanded strategic bowling changes, a tactic used historically to disrupt set batsmen. Despite limited opportunities, Boje ended his Test career with a solid batting average of 32, a respectable figure that surpassed several of his contemporaries. In One Day Internationals (ODIs), he maintained an average of 26 and notably scored a century during a series against New Zealand, playing a pivotal role in South Africa’s series victory.

Bowling Achievements and Retirement

Though primarily a part-time bowler, Boje took a total of 100 wickets in international cricket. His final wicket was that of Mahela Jayawardene of Sri Lanka, captured during his last professional match. He retired from international cricket in 2006, citing his desire for more playing time and a shift in focus toward his family life and business ventures.

Life After Cricket and Personal Endeavors

Following his retirement, Boje settled in Cape Town with his wife and two children. He remains involved in the sport by managing a local cricket team and overseeing business interests. His net worth is estimated at approximately $1 million. Further details about his life and career can be found on his Wikipedia page and various cricket-focused websites.
