Rami Said Malek was born in 1981 in California to Egyptian immigrant parents. He has an identical twin brother named Sami, who is four minutes younger. Malek attended Notre Dame High School in California before earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2003 from the University of Evansville, where he studied acting.
Malek began his acting career with guest roles on television series such as Gilmore Girls, Medium, and Over There. He also contributed uncredited voice work for the popular video game Halo 2. His first major television role came in the Fox comedy series The War at Home, where he portrayed Kenny, a gay teenager. This role brought him early recognition and allowed him to branch into more prominent projects.
Malek made his film debut as Pharaoh Ahkmenrah in Night at the Museum (2006). He reprised the role in its sequels Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (2009) and Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb (2014). His film career continued with diverse supporting roles, including parts in Larry Crowne (2011), in which he played a college student named Steve Dibiasi after being recommended by Tom Hanks, and The Master (2012), directed by Paul Thomas Anderson.
He also appeared in independent films such as Ain’t Them Bodies Saints and Short Term 12, both critically acclaimed. His other film credits include Oldboy (2013), Da Sweet Blood of Jesus (2014) directed by Spike Lee, Need for Speed (2014), and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 (2012), where he played the vampire Benjamin.
