Richard Schiff is known as an American actor and comedian. He is most famous for playing Toby Ziegler on The West Wing.
Richard Schiff was born on May 27, 1955 in Bethesda, Maryland. He was born as the second of three children of Charlotte, a TV and distributing official, and Edward Schiff, a land legal counselor. His folks separated from each other when he was 12. His father was a second-generation Austrian and his mom is French. He dropped out of high school but still went to college. In 1973, he studied quickly at The City College of New York however didn't graduate. He moved to Colorado where he discovered work in cutting kindling. Coming back to New York in 1975, he started to study acting at CCNY and was enrolled in their auditorium program.
Schiff at first studied directing. He directed a few off-Broadway plays, including Antigone in 1983 with a freshly graduated Angela Bassett. Angela would go on to become on of the biggest African American actresses in the entertainment business. She blew up on the scene when she starred in the movie, Waiting to Exhale. Schiff could see that she was going to be a big star when he worked with her in her early days.
In the mid-1980s, Schiff chose to take a stab at acting and handled a few TV roles. He was discovered by Steven Spielberg in an episode of the TV drama High Incident and was cast in The Lost World: Jurassic Park in 1997. The role in Jurassic Park got him a lot of exposure because the dinosaur action movie was a big hit among moviegoers. His career started an upward climb that prompted his co-featuring role as White House Communications Director Toby Ziegler on Aaron Sorkin's honor winning TV seriesThe West Wing. Schiff wound up known for his independent and exceptional approach to his acting craft and his professionalism behind the scenes.
In September 2019, the third season of the Good Doctor made its debut. In the medical drama, Schiff plays a character named Dr. Aaron Glassman.
Schiff is married to his spouse, Sheila Kelley. He met his better half Kelley during his tryouts for Antigone in 1983. Following a long committed relationship, the couple got married on the 31st of August 1996. They have given birth to a son, Gus Schiff and a little girl named Ruby Schiff.
