Royce Da 5'9", born Ryan Daniel Montgomery, is an American rapper known for both his solo work and numerous collaborations. He adopted the stage name "Royce Da 5'9"" during high school while living in Oak Park, Michigan, having moved there at the age of ten. The moniker was inspired by a Turkish link chain he wore, featuring an “R” pendant resembling the Rolls-Royce logo, and coinciding with his height at the time—5 feet 9 inches.
Royce began rapping at the age of 18, drawing inspiration from influential artists such as Detroit’s Most Wanted, Esham, The Notorious B.I.G., Tupac Shakur, Redman, and Ras Kass. His early career was marked by a deal with Tommy Boy Records in 1998, followed by a signing with Columbia Records for his initial album project, Rock City. The album, named in tribute to Detroit's historical association with Motown Records, was eventually leaked. As a result, Royce parted ways with Columbia and re-recorded the album, which was later released under Koch Records as Rock City (Version 2.0).
Though it did not achieve significant commercial success, the single “Boom,” produced by DJ Premier, earned underground acclaim and catalyzed an ongoing partnership between the two artists.
Royce Da 5'9" is best known for his long-standing association with Eminem, forming the rap duo Bad Meets Evil. He was also a founding member of the hip-hop supergroup Slaughterhouse alongside Crooked I, Joell Ortiz, and Joe Budden. In addition, he collaborated with DJ Premier under the name PRhyme, further cementing his position within collaborative hip-hop circles.
His writing talents extended beyond performance—he became a skilled ghostwriter for several major artists, including Dr. Dre and Sean “Diddy” Combs.
Royce was recognized for his lyrical abilities when About.com ranked him No. 30 on its list of the Top 50 MCs from 1987 to 2007.
