Blair began her acting journey in 1990 with a theatre production of Murder in the Cathedral, although she later admitted to struggling in her debut performance. While in New York, she pursued formal acting training and auditioned frequently, eventually landing her first television role in an episode of the Nickelodeon series The Adventures of Pete & Pete.
She secured her first lead film role in Strong Island Boys. Blair later co-starred with Karl Urban in the television pilot Amazon High, portraying an orphaned high school student who travels through time. Although she was briefly considered for the role of Joey Potter in Dawson’s Creek, the part ultimately went to Katie Holmes. She also auditioned for Buffy the Vampire Slayer but was not cast.
Blair's breakthrough came in 1999 with her role as Cecile Caldwell in the film Cruel Intentions, an adaptation of the French novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses. The film was a commercial success and earned her critical attention. For her performance, she received a nomination at the MTV Movie Awards.
Following this, she starred as Zoe Bean in the television series Zoe, Duncan, Jack and Jane, alongside Michael Rosenbaum and Azura Skye. She expanded her resume with roles in films such as Down to You, Kill Me Later, and The Sweetest Thing. Her international success was cemented with her role in the 2001 comedy film Legally Blonde, which topped the U.S. box office.
Throughout her career, Selma Blair has appeared in a variety of notable films spanning multiple genres. Outside of acting, she has been involved in fashion and advocacy, often using her public platform to engage in political and philanthropic causes.
