Shari Headley was born on July 15, 1964, in Queens, New York, United States. She was raised in a middle-class household as the youngest of four children. From a young age, Headley aspired to become a performer and frequently participated in school productions and local shows during her high school years.
Headley began her professional acting career in 1985 with a guest appearance on the NBC sitcom The Cosby Show. Her breakthrough role came in 1988 when she portrayed Lisa McDowell in the critically acclaimed and commercially successful romantic comedy Coming to America, starring Eddie Murphy. The film was a box office hit, grossing over $288 million worldwide.
In 1991, Headley joined the cast of the ABC daytime soap opera All My Children, where she played Detective Mimi Reed. Her performance on the show spanned intermittently until 1994 and later appeared again through 2005.
