Sheila Escovedo AKA Sheila E. (her stage name) is a known American drummer, singer and a well-known percussionist whose extraordinary co- workers include well known people like Jennifer Lopez, Kanye West, Lionel Richie, Prince, Billy Cobham, Hans Zimmer, Ringo Starr, George Duke and Beyonce.
She was born on 12th December 1957 in California to Juanita (Gardere), a dairy factory worker and a percussionist (in case you wondered where she got her exceptional skills from) Pete Escovedo with whom she gets on stage with time to time. Escovedo is a part of Mexican heritage and she had her uncle Tito Puente as her Godfather. She was meant to do great with such rich history, which goes as her uncle Javier Escovedo founded ‘The zeros’. Mario Escovedo (another uncle) introduced the world to long-running indie rock music. Coke Escovedo, founder of band Azteca is also related to her and she is a biological niece to Nicole Richie.
She could be termed as genres queen as she has a list of songs mainly under all of them showing her versatility and talent. The genres she rules include Jazz (Latin and fusion both) charts, Pop, funk and pop rock as well. She has mastered herself on vocals, guitar, bass, percussion and drums. She has been a part of the musical industry since she was 18 i.e. since 1976 and is still going on. She made her debut with jazz with bassist Alphonso Johnson. She worked with him in ‘Yesterday's Dream’ (1976). In her early twenties, she made a mark of her talent with Herbie Hancock, George Duke, Lionel Richie, Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye.
In her biography it says her former boyfriend Prince first met her at a concert in 1978 (performing with her Dad) after the show, he met her and cheesy as it could get he flirted with her saying that he and his bassist were bickering about which one of them would be her husband first and also promised her that she would join his band one day which eventually happened soon. They got together while recording The Purple Rain in which she provided vocals to Erotic city and Let's Go Crazy in 1984. Her work with Prince gave her a place in Hot 100 in 1984 with her hit The Glamorous Life (#7 on the list) and stayed there for two weeks. She is not married yet, but has been in a relationship with the song of her life gliding her way through.
Her achievements won her a number of awards, including Grammy for best new artist and MTV award for best female video and best choreography as well. But while Prince was known to be romantically involved with her, he was still dating Wendy Melvion, which created quite a few problems of course. Her other famous and successful works include Romance 1600 (1985), A love bizarre and Holly rock. Her best pop albums were recorded in the 80's. She also worked as a writer and musician in prince's many records and big hits like Madhouse. She also played the role of Drummer and musical director for him once. Thus marking her exceptional journey and her net worth in the music industry, she still lives to watch her glory being cherished by people.
