Early Life and Education

Stephanie Courtney was born on February 9, 1970, in Stony Point, New York, United States. She spent most of her childhood in New York alongside her two siblings. She attended Binghamton University, where she earned a degree in English in 1992. During her college years, Courtney actively participated in theater productions and notably portrayed Elizabeth Proctor in a staging of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. Her early immersion in performing arts sparked a deep interest in acting that shaped her future career.

Beginning of Acting Career

After graduating in 1992, Courtney moved to New York City to pursue a professional acting career. She enrolled at the Neighborhood Playhouse to study acting while also working at Smith Barney to support herself. Later, she relocated to Los Angeles with her sister, actress Jennifer Courtney, to further her opportunities in entertainment.

Stephanie and her sister co-wrote and performed the comedy show The Courtney Girls at the Aspen Comedy Festival. She returned to the festival with a solo performance titled Hooray for America. In 2004, she became a main company member of the famed improvisational and sketch comedy troupe The Groundlings, which became instrumental in honing her comedic skills and advancing her career.

Commercial Success and the Rise of Flo

Courtney has appeared in numerous national commercials for major brands, including Bud Light, McDonald’s, Skittles, Quaker Oats, and Toyota. However, she is best known for her portrayal of “Flo,” the enthusiastic and quirky spokesperson for Progressive Insurance. This role, which began in 2008, brought her widespread recognition and has become one of the most iconic advertising characters in recent memory.

Film Career

Stephanie Courtney made her film debut in 1998, playing the role of Kate in Sweet Bird of You. Her film credits include a variety of comedic roles: she played Alex in Melvin Goes to Dinner (2003), Sara in The Brothers Solomon (2007), Gayla in The Heartbreak Kid (2007), and appeared as a reporter in the Will Ferrell comedy Blades of Glory (2007). She also gained visibility among younger audiences with her role as Kevin’s mom in Fred: The Movie (2010) and its sequel, Fred 2: Night of the Living Fred (2011).
