Traci Braxton

Early Life and Formation of The Braxtons

Traci Renee Braxton (born April 2, 1971) was an American singer and a former member of the R&B girl group The Braxtons. The group included Traci and her four sisters: Toni (born in 1967), Towanda (born in 1973), Trina (born in 1974), and Tamar (born in 1977). Raised in a strict religious household, all five sisters began their singing careers as members of their church choir, which became their first experience performing together.

In 1989, the sisters were discovered and signed by Arista Records. The group released their debut single, "Good Life," in 1990. Though the single reached number 79 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, it was their only release under Arista. Due to marketing challenges and the age differences among group members, the label decided not to pursue a full album, and The Braxtons were released from their contract.

Toni Braxton’s Solo Career and Group Transitions

In 1991, eldest sister Toni Braxton signed with LaFace Records, which was newly aligned with Arista and had recently signed TLC. Toni's sisters, including Traci, supported her career by performing as her backup singers on tour and in music videos.

In 1993, LaFace Records attempted to relaunch The Braxtons after executive Bryant Reid signed them again. However, an album was never released. When Reid transitioned to Atlantic Records, he brought the group with him. During the 1995 sessions under Atlantic, Traci left the group to become a youth counselor. On a later episode of the reality show Starting Over (2004), Towanda confirmed that Traci's exit from the group was due to her pregnancy and a resulting decision by the label.

Reality TV and Solo Career

Traci Braxton returned to the spotlight by appearing on the WEtv reality series Braxton Family Values alongside her sisters. Her personality and resilience won her many fans. In 2013, Traci and her husband Kevin Surratt appeared on Marriage Boot Camp, a relationship-focused reality series. That same year, Traci launched her solo singing career with the independent entertainment company Entertainment One.

Often praised for her versatile vocal range, Traci was able to sing alongside both Trina (alto) and Tamar (soprano), and she and Tamar were noted for utilizing the whistle register. Her debut solo album, Crash & Burn, was released in October 2014. It debuted at number 108 on the Billboard 200 chart. The lead single "Last Call" achieved moderate success, peaking at number 16 on the Billboard Adult R&B Songs chart. That year, Traci also began hosting a radio talk show titled The Traci Braxton Show on BLIS.FM, which received favorable feedback from listeners.

Marital Controversies and Public Scrutiny

During an episode of Braxton Family Values, a rumor emerged during Tamar's bridal shower that Kevin Surratt, Traci's husband of 20 years, might have fathered a child in an extramarital affair. Traci began receiving reports from friends who claimed to have seen photos of Kevin with a young child. Though Kevin denied all allegations, the family involved a private investigator to explore the claims further.
