Wesley Matthews Jr. was born in 1986 in San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Wesley Matthews Sr., a former NBA point guard and two-time NBA champion with the Los Angeles Lakers in 1987 and 1988. His mother, Pam Moore, was an All-American runner and also played basketball. Matthews Jr. spent part of his childhood in Miami, where he attended elementary school.
Wesley Matthews attended James Madison Memorial High School in Madison, Wisconsin. He was a standout athlete, excelling in both basketball and soccer. In 2005, he was named Wisconsin’s Mr. Basketball, recognizing him as the top high school player in the state.
Despite pressure to attend the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where his father once played, Matthews chose to attend Marquette University. During his college career with the Marquette Golden Eagles, Matthews formed a memorable trio known as the “Three Amigos” alongside Jerel McNeal and Dominic James. The three guards started nearly every game together from their freshman year through the end of their college careers. Although not the tallest player for his position, Matthews developed a physical style of play, becoming known for his ability to drive to the basket effectively. He recorded a standout performance with 13 rebounds and 48 points in a game against Division II opponent Lewis Flyers on December 28, 2005.
