He initially played as a forward in minor hockey, winning several provincial titles. At just 15, his dedication to the sport led him to move away from home to attend Athol Murray College of Notre Dame, a high school known for its strong hockey program. There, he played 31 games in a season that earned him an athletic scholarship to Clarkson University.

Willie Mitchell married Megan, a Minnesota native, on August 17, 2006. The couple resides in the Yaletown neighborhood of Vancouver and maintains a low profile while staying actively involved in community and philanthropic efforts.

Early Career (1994–1999)

Beginning his career in 1994–95, Mitchell first played for the Kelowna Spartans in the BCHL, appearing in 43 games. He then joined the Melfort Mustangs of the SJHL, attracting NHL attention. He was drafted 199th overall by the New Jersey Devils in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. Subsequently, Mitchell played two seasons of NCAA Division I hockey with Clarkson University, where he developed into a top defenseman, further strengthening his path to the NHL.

Transition to the NHL (1999–2006)

Mitchell made his NHL debut with the New Jersey Devils before playing in the AHL for six games near the end of the 1999–2000 season. He later joined the Minnesota Wild, playing a full season in 2001–02 and quickly becoming a mainstay in their defense line, appearing in 63 games.

In the 2005–06 season, Mitchell was traded to the Dallas Stars in exchange for Martin Skoula. During his time with Dallas, he maintained his reputation as a reliable and tough defenseman.
