Barry Bostwick was born on February 24, 1945, in San Mateo, CA. He is the son of Elizabeth Defendorf and Henry Bostwick. His father worked as a city organizer and actor.
In 1972, Barry Bostwick got a big break as a stage actor when he started playing the role of Danny Zuko in the stage musical of Grease, getting a Tony Award nomination for his role. This star making performance was followed by a voice work as Terr in Fantastic Planet. He then featured with Tim Curry and Susan Sarandon in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, portraying the character of Brad Majors.
In 1996, Bostwick became a familiar face on TV when he portrayed the role of Randall Winston, the city corridor pioneer of New York City in the popular sitcom Spin City. The show was first led by Michael J. Fox but he was then replaced by Charlie Sheen because of an illness. Bostwick replaced Peter Scolari as Mr. Tyler, the father of Amanda Bynes' and Jennie Garth's lead characters, on the TV show, What I Like About You. In 2003, Bostwick appeared on Scrubs as a patient resolved to have prostate harmful development. In 2008, he appeared in a scene on Ugly Betty as a legal counselor for the Meade family. In 2010, Bostwick appeared in the Rocky Horror-themed Glee scene.
Bostwick played Roger Frank on the sitcom Cougar Town which starred Courteney Cox. In season 3 of the drama show, Bostwick's character progressed toward turning out to be community administrator of the town the show is set in, Gulf Haven. In 2015, Bostwick featured in Darren Lynn Bousman's segment of the assortment film Tales of Halloween, which was his subsequent time acting under Bousman after The Devil's Carnival. He appeared in the parody violence film Helen Keller versus Nightwolves.
Bostwick portrayed Collin Winthrop, father of the Gig Harbor Killer, in an episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation called "The End Game". He was honored to play a role in the season finale of the mainstream show.
