Aurabella "Belita" Moreno was born on November 1, 1949, in Dallas, Texas. She was the firstborn child of Abel and Aurora Moreno. Her mother, Aurora, was a high school Spanish teacher. Belita grew up with her younger sister, Elsie. Her passion for acting began early when her mother encouraged her to audition for a church play—a formative experience that sparked her lifelong love for the stage.
Determined to pursue a career in acting, Moreno applied for and received a full-tuition scholarship to the Theatre Department at Southern Methodist University, recognized as one of the top acting programs in the United States. During her time at SMU, she performed in productions at the Bob Hope Theatre and the Mango Jones Experimental Theatre. After graduating, she continued her training at the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts in Santa Maria, California.
Moreno began her screen career in the late 1970s with minor roles in film. However, it was her work in television that brought her widespread recognition. She appeared in popular series such as Valerie (1988), Perfect Strangers (1986–1992), The Golden Girls (1986), Full House (1986), Roseanne (1993), and Melrose Place (1996).
In addition to her television success, she appeared in several notable films, including Robert Altman’s 3 Women (1977), Oh, God! You Devil (1984), Do You Remember Love? (1985), Nobody’s Fool (1986), Men Don’t Leave (1989), and Grosse Pointe Blank (1997).
During the 1980s, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Beth Henley wrote specific roles for Moreno, including Popeye in The Miss Firecracker Contest and Lacey Rollins in The Lucky Spot. Moreno also starred in Henley's Broadway debut, The Wake of Jamey Foster (1982), and performed at the South Coast Repertory in 1989. Her longstanding partnership with Henley affirmed her place as a versatile and dependable actress in theater circles.
