Brent Celek

Brent Celek became a wealthy man when he had signed the 13 million dollar contract for the duration of 3 years when he signed with the Philadelphia Eagles. The contract also included a signing bonus of 3 million which was an excellent perk for Brent. Most NFL contracts only come with small guarantees because of the nature of the spot. The owners of teams can’t take the risk of giving guaranteed money to a player when the risk of injury and possibility of not being able to finish a contract is so high. Safer sports like baseball and basketball are more likely to hand out guaranteed contracts. Celek was fortunate to get 6 million dollars guaranteed from his average salary of 4 million dollars.

Brent Celek was not invited in the year 2007 NFL Scouting Combine because he wasn’t expected to be a top round pick but he was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the fifth round. The Combine is usually just reserved for players that are expected to be selected in the first three rounds. Celek signed a usual rookie contract of four years with the Eagle in 2007. Celek had an impressive rookie season and set franchise records just like he did in his college and high school years. He set the Eagles franchise record for total receiver yards during the game when he had 131 yards in week 9. Along with the 131 yards, Celek caught two touchdown passes. The record setting game came against the Arizona Cardinals. Celek continued his stellar play into the playoffs. During the playoffs, he caught 19 passes.

Celek received the starting tight end position for the Philadelphia Eagle when former starter, L.J Smith decided to depart through free agency when he signed with the Baltimore Ravens. After scoring a touchdown in a week 9 home game against the Dallas Cowboys, Celek was penalized for excessive celebration. The NFL has been trying to reduce the amount of celebrating because they feel like it is bad sportsmanship. After the game, the penalization of Celek was reviewed and lifted but he was warned not to repeat the same thing again. When his contract expired with the Eagle, it was renewed for six years.
