In many interviews, Doris stated that if it wasn’t for her beloved husband, she wouldn’t have ever been on TV. When she was asked what the original plan was before she got into the broadcasting business. Doris said “There's not a doubt in my mind I would have been a high school teacher and coach. When I left high school, I told myself I was going to get a major in education and be a high school teacher and coach. That was definitely the original plan”.
A few years down the line, things took a turn and the couple got divorced. The divorce settlement and the custody of the kids were kept a secret.
In 1990, Doris Burke started her professional career by broadcasting on radio for her alma mater as an analyst for women’s games. During the same year, she started working as an analyst for Big East Women basketball games. Six years later, in 1996, she started working as an analyst on Big East Men’s games as well, becoming the first female to work in that job.
Burke made history as a New York Knicks announcer, being the first female analyst to call a New York Knicks game on the radio and on television in 2000. Doris has been the leading voice of TV and radio of the Liberty New York for several years. In 2009, she became a sideline reporter for the NBA Finals working for ABC Sports.
In 2010, Doris was featured as the sideline reporter for the video game, NBA 2K11 and she continued to be present in all future editions of the game.
In 2013, Doris signed a multiyear contract extension to keep serving as an NBA commentator for ESPN. She also debuted in the pre-game show “NBA Countdown” with Jalen Rose and Avery Johnson. In 2017, Doris became a regular game analyst for ESPN, becoming the first woman to be assigned a full regular-season role in NBA commentary.
