Elizabeth Perkins was born in New York, in the place called Queens. She is a daughter of Jo Williams, who is a concert pianist and a drug treatment counselor. Her father is called James Perkins and he was a businessman, a writer and a farmer.  The parents of her father were from Greek and they changed their surname to Perkins from Pisperikos when they reached to United States.  She grew up in Colrian of Massachusetts city and the parents divorced in the year 1963. She started to work in the Theater called Arena Civic Theater, it is a non-profit community theater group that it is based in Massachusetts in Greenfield. She went to Northfield Mount Hermon School. It was elite preparatory school and afterwards she spend some time in Chicago where she got a BFA in the acting when she was in Goodman School of Drama at De Paul University.  In the year 1984, she made the theatrical debut at Broadway in Brighton Beach Memoirs at Neil Simon. After sometime, she worked in different companies which include Steppenwolf Theater and New York Shakespeare Festival.

Elizabeth Perkins got married to Terry Kinney in the year 1984 and she got divorced in the year 1988. She got a daughter called Hannah Jo Philips who was born in the year 1991.  In 2000 she got married to Julio Macat who is a cinematographer of Argentinean Origins. She gained 3 Stepsons through this relationship. When she was 44 year old, she found out that she was suffering from the Latent autoimmune diabetes and this is a type of the Juvenile diabetes that it is most of the time diagnosed to someone during her middle age.
