Her paternal grandparents were of Greek descent and originally bore the surname Pisperikos before anglicizing it to Perkins upon immigrating to the United States.
Perkins was raised in Colrain, Massachusetts, following her parents’ divorce in 1963. Her early passion for acting emerged at the Arena Civic Theatre, a non-profit community theater in Greenfield, Massachusetts. She attended the prestigious Northfield Mount Hermon School, an elite preparatory institution, before pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting at the Goodman School of Drama at DePaul University in Chicago.
