George Strait was not interested in country music as a young man; he usually preferred listening to rock and roll, but eventually changed his focus to country music. Not having been formally trained in music, George joined a college band where he saw a flyer advertisement for a vocalist. While at Texas State, he also established his country band, Ace in the Hole. "Unwound" was his first single album, released in 1981.
Some of Strait's notable works include "Strait Out of the Box," a four-disc box set highlighting Strait's career, which was produced in 1995 and became one of the most significant-selling box sets in music history. His album "Blue Clear Sky" climbed to number one on the country charts and number seven on the pop charts. In 1997, he released "Carrying Your Love with Me," followed by "One Step at a Time" in 1998. "George Strait, The Album," featuring his song "Go On," came out in 2000. Strait has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, including 13 multi-platinum albums. He is third only to Elvis Presley and The Beatles with the most gold and platinum albums in music history. Over 35 years, George has the second-highest number of albums sold in country music history and has won many prestigious awards in his musical career.
Straight has 44 Billboard No. 1 singles, the most of any artist in any genre of music. He is also the only artist in history to have a top ten hit annually for over thirty years. In addition, George holds 22 CMA wins and is the most nominated artist in CMA history with a count of 81 Country Music nominations. During Strait's last tour, "The Cowboy Rides Away," he gave a concert in Texas at AT&T Stadium in Arlington in June 2014 that drew 104,793 people, marking a new record for the largest indoor show in North America. In 1992, Strait featured in his first movie, "Pure Country." He has also acted in other films, including The Soldier in 1982 and Grand Champion in 2002.Return to the previous page
