Keri Hilson is an American singer, songwriter, record producer, actress, and dancer. She was born and raised in Decatur, Georgia. From a young age, she expressed a passion for music and began working with producer Anthony Dent. By the age of 14, she had secured a record deal as a member of the girl group D’Signe, which disbanded shortly after.
Hilson attended Oxford College of Emory University and later Emory University in Atlanta. During her college years, she balanced her studies while working as a songwriter and background vocalist for major R&B and pop artists, including Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Lopez, and Britney Spears. She joined the songwriting and production collective known as The Clutch, contributing to several successful projects in the mid-2000s.
In 2006, Hilson signed with Mosley Music Group, the record label founded by influential rapper and producer Timbaland. Her breakthrough came in 2007 when she was featured on Timbaland’s single “The Way I Are,” which achieved international chart success and solidified her presence in the mainstream music industry.
Keri Hilson's debut studio album, In a Perfect World..., was released in 2009. The album incorporated R&B, pop, and hip hop influences and featured themes of love, sexuality, and empowerment. Inspired in part by her father’s musical family, Hilson dedicated the album to personal storytelling and emotional depth.
In a Perfect World... debuted at number four on the US Billboard 200 and was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The album produced several hit singles including “Turnin Me On,” “Knock You Down,” and “I Like.” The song “Knock You Down,” featuring Kanye West and Ne-Yo, earned her two Grammy Award nominations: Best New Artist and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration.
