Khandi Alexander is a professional American dancer, choreographer as well as an actress. She has appeared in many movies and TV shows, but is best known for her role of Dr. Alexx Woods in CSI: Miami as well as in HBO’s Treme, where she played the character of LaDonna Batiste-Williams. Dancing from a very young age, she started out as an actress after appearing in small TV roles from later 80s. Her first notable role came in 1985, after she appeared in FTV, a sketch-comedy show. Toward early 1990, she started to concentrate in more pivotal roles that came in TV shows and movies such as Sugar Hill, Poetic Justice, What's Love Got to Do with It and CB4.

Khandi was born on the 4th of September 1957, and was raised in New York City, USA. She was born into a family of performers, as her mother Alverina Yavonna was an opera singer/ dancer whereas her father Roland Alexander had a construction business. From the age of 6, she learned dancing of different forms; contemporary, opera and tango. With her performing skills, she impressed the dance teacher at her school. Studying in Queens borough Community College, she made her debut in Broadway in musical plays like Dreamgirls, Chicago, Dream Girls and Bob Fosse's Dancing. Her other notable works in early career was when she appeared as a dancer in the music video of Natalie Cole’s “Pink Cadillac", which was released in 1988. The same year, she was assigned as the choreographer for Whitney Houston’s world tour from 1988 to 1992.
