Khandi Alexander

Khandi Alexander is a professional American dancer, choreographer as well as an actress. She has appeared in many movies and TV shows, but is best known for her role of Dr. Alexx Woods in CSI: Miami as well as in HBO’s Treme, where she played the character of LaDonna Batiste-Williams. Dancing from a very young age, she started out as an actress after appearing in small TV roles from later 80s. Her first notable role came in 1985, after she appeared in FTV, a sketch-comedy show. Toward early 1990, she started to concentrate in more pivotal roles that came in TV shows and movies such as Sugar Hill, Poetic Justice, What's Love Got to Do with It and CB4.

Then, she got a major role, maybe her first prominent role in NBC’s comedy series News Radio. Again in ER, she played the role of Jackie Robbins and made several guest appearances in TV shows like Body of Proof, La Femme Nikita, Third Watch, Cosby, Better off Ted and many others. Her role of Fran Boyd, a single mother addicted to drugs was very promising in the series The Corner, for which she won a critical acclaim for her performance in 2000. She also won the Emmy Award for her role, and the series won an Emmy of its own. Probably known for her longest serving role in CSI: Miami, she played in that show from 2002 to 2008 and later returned in a special role in 2009.

Khandi was born on the 4th of September 1957, and was raised in New York City, USA. She was born into a family of performers, as her mother Alverina Yavonna was an opera singer/ dancer whereas her father Roland Alexander had a construction business. From the age of 6, she learned dancing of different forms; contemporary, opera and tango. With her performing skills, she impressed the dance teacher at her school. Studying in Queens borough Community College, she made her debut in Broadway in musical plays like Dreamgirls, Chicago, Dream Girls and Bob Fosse's Dancing. Her other notable works in early career was when she appeared as a dancer in the music video of Natalie Cole’s “Pink Cadillac", which was released in 1988. The same year, she was assigned as the choreographer for Whitney Houston’s world tour from 1988 to 1992. With a great talent and potential, she has been working actively since 1985 and has made a fortune. With a reputed fame and popularity, she has a big fan following on her Twitter site.

Having appeared in more than 100 different TV shows and films, her work and talent has earned her a lot of money and fame, along with different awards. She was nominated for the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, for her role in News Radio. In 2001, she received the Black Reel Awards for Best Actress for her role in The Corner. Her role in Treme saw her received the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series in 2013. She was recently nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for her role in Scandal, having already received the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, for the same series.
