Landry Jones was born in 1989 in New Mexico. He attended Artesia High School, where he was the starting quarterback and led his team to back-to-back state championships. Over his high school career, he passed for a combined total of 7,013 yards and 89 touchdowns. As a senior in 2007, Jones threw for 3,433 yards and 45 touchdowns. In the state championship game against Goddard High School, he set school records by throwing for 325 yards and seven touchdowns. For his outstanding performance, Jones was named the Class 4A Player of the Year and was a finalist for the Joe Montana Quarterback of the Year award.
Jones was recognized as one of the top quarterback prospects in the 2008 recruiting class. He earned a four-star rating from both Scout.com and Rivals.com. His impressive performances attracted interest from several major college programs, including Wisconsin, Virginia, UCLA, Stanford, Oregon, and Colorado. Ultimately, Jones chose to play for the University of Oklahoma.
Jones played for the Oklahoma Sooners from 2008 to 2012. Initially redshirted his freshman year, he served as a backup to Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford. After third-string quarterback Keith Nichol transferred to Michigan State, Jones moved up the depth chart. In the 2009 season, Bradford suffered a shoulder injury, and Jones became the starting quarterback. Despite a loss in his debut start, Jones went on to have a productive college career, setting multiple school passing records and becoming one of the most prolific passers in program history.
