Background and Early Life

Mariah Carey was born on March 27, 1970, in Huntington, Long Island, New York. She is the daughter of Alfred Roy Carey, an African-American and Venezuelan aeronautical engineer, and Patricia Carey, an Irish-American opera singer and vocal coach. Mariah is the youngest of three children, with an older brother, Morgan, and an older sister, Alison.

Music Career and Commercial Success

At the age of 18, Carey signed a recording contract with Columbia Records. Her self-titled debut album, released in 1990, produced four No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100: "Vision of Love," "Love Takes Time," "Someday," and "I Don't Wanna Cry." Her early success marked the beginning of a remarkable career.

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Carey released multiple chart-topping albums and singles across a range of musical styles, including pop, R&B, and hip-hop. With 19 No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100—more than any solo artist in history as of 2024—and over 200 million records sold worldwide, Mariah Carey ranks among the most commercially successful female recording artists.

Viral Moments and Social Media Presence

In July 2019, Carey participated in the #BottleCapChallenge, a popular viral trend. Instead of using a kick to twist off the bottle cap, as others did, she employed her signature high whistle note. In a six-second video shared on Twitter, Carey struck a dramatic pose before hitting an impossibly high note, which caused the cap to spin off. The clip quickly went viral, amassing more than 20 million views in just 24 hours and drawing widespread admiration from fans and celebrities alike.

Marriage and Family Life

Carey married music executive Tommy Mottola in June 1993 in a lavish ceremony at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Manhattan. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1998. She later entered a relationship with Latin singer Luis Miguel, which reportedly ended in mid-2001.

In 2008, Carey began dating actor and rapper Nick Cannon after he appeared in the music video for her song "Bye Bye." The couple married on April 30, 2008, in a private ceremony in the Bahamas. They welcomed twins, Moroccan and Monroe, in 2011.

After six years of marriage, Carey and Cannon announced their separation in 2014, finalizing their divorce in 2016. That same year, Carey got engaged to Australian businessman James Packer; however, the engagement ended later in 2016. Following their split, Carey began a relationship with her backup dancer Bryan Tanaka, who also appeared in her reality TV series, Mariah's World.
