Marisa Tomei was born on December 4, 1964, in Brooklyn, New York, to English teacher Adelaide "Addie" and trial lawyer Gary A. Tomei. She was partly reared by her paternal grandparents and had a younger brother, actor Adam Tomei. Tomei's parents are both Italian, with her father's ancestors hailing from Tuscany, Calabria, and Campania, and her mother's from Tuscany and Sicily. In 1982, she received her diploma from Edward R. Murrow High School. Tomei grew up in Brooklyn's Midwood neighborhood. She was charmed by the Broadway performances that her theatre-loving parents took her to and was drawn to acting as a career while she was there. She played Hedy LaRue in a school performance of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying at Andries Hudde Junior High School. She went to Boston University for a year after graduating from high school.


Marisa Tomei started to play when she was too young in the CBS soap opera As The World Turns, and when she left school, she played Marcy Thompson. She played for the movie for the first time, The Flamingo Kid. Before moving to Los Angeles, she played in Like Daughters.

She played the role of a roommate of Lisa Bonet in A different World. While playing My cousin and The Karate Kids, many people agree that her comedic performance deserved an Academic Award nomination. However, she got an Oscar for this role, but some say it was the wrong name since the person to read it was an older adult, Jack Palance.

Her Oscar did not produce the boost that many people expect from it. She went ahead and starred in many movies that did not do a good job to her talent, and she was not able to make it at the box office. Some of her roles, like Untamed Heart in Weepy Romance, were a commercial and critical disappointment.

Her performance in this role led to an Academy Award Nomination. She played a silent star called Mabel Normand in the Chaplin. She played in a firefighter drama in Rescue me and in the Rich Inner Life of Penelope Cloud Comedy. Her role in The Wrestler, where she played with Mickey Rourke, got her a Golden Globe nomination and Academy Award. She featured in the Who Do You Think You Are?, in the third season of NBC show, and she found out that she came from the Tuscany region in Italy. His great grandfather at her mother's side was murdered. He was Francesco Leopoldo Bianchi.

Tomei and actor Logan Marshall-Green were in a relationship from 2008 to 2012. They were thought to be dating. However, Tomei's representative refuted this. "I'm not a great admirer of marriage as an institution, and I'm not sure why women need to have children to be recognized as whole human beings," Tomei stated in 2009.
