Tomei's parents are both Italian, with her father's ancestors hailing from Tuscany, Calabria, and Campania, and her mother's from Tuscany and Sicily. In 1982, she received her diploma from Edward R. Murrow High School. Tomei grew up in Brooklyn's Midwood neighborhood. She was charmed by the Broadway performances that her theatre-loving parents took her to and was drawn to acting as a career while she was there.
