Early Life and Education
Matthew Gray Gubler was born in Las Vegas, Nevada. His mother, Marilyn, worked as a political consultant and rancher, while his father, John Gubler, is an attorney. Gubler attended the Las Vegas Academy of the Arts, where he majored in acting because the school did not offer a filmmaking program, his primary interest at the time. He later studied film directing at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. Although he briefly attended the University of California, Santa Cruz, he did not graduate from there, nor did he attend Brigham Young University (BYU).

Modeling and Early Career
While attending NYU, Gubler was discovered by a talent scout and soon signed with DNA Model Management. He modeled for several major fashion brands, including American Eagle, Marc Jacobs, and Tommy Hilfiger. He was ranked 46th on models.com’s list of the top 50 male models. This modeling work helped launch his entertainment career.
Breakthrough Role: Criminal Minds
Gubler's acting breakthrough came in 2005 when he was cast as Dr. Spencer Reid, a criminal profiler, in CBS's long-running television series Criminal Minds. He portrayed Reid throughout the show’s fifteen-season run and directed eight episodes, showcasing his talents behind the camera. This role remains one of his most recognized contributions to television.
Film Career and Notable Roles
Gubler gained his first film role as Nico in Wes Anderson’s The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou after Anderson encouraged him to audition during his internship on the set. He appeared in various other films, including (500) Days of Summer, Life After Beth, Suburban Gothic, and RV. His performance in Suburban Gothic earned him the Best Actor award at Screamfest. Gubler also voiced Simon the chipmunk in Alvin and the Chipmunks and its sequels.
